My Story
I grew up as the youngest in a family of 3 brothers and 2 sisters in a small fishing village of 500 families on the island of Libjo, also known as Surigao del Norte, Philippines. My father was a fisherman of many generations. The disciplines of fishing is where I learned the importance of family and the local trade. Whether on my father’s boat or swimming in the ocean with family and friends, I grew to appreciate and fall in love with nature and the vastness of the ocean.
From my earliest years I wanted to find ways to capture the beauty of nature that captured me. By the age of 6, I was drawing a large horse on our classroom blackboard. I worked through recess unaware of anything around me. I was lost in my young work on the black canvas standing precariously on a classroom stool, failing to notice recess was long over with many classmates and older students from the other classes standing behind me watching. When I finished, I was encouraged by a cacophony of cheers and acknowledgement. Standing there shocked embarrassed and finally enjoying the attention, I knew this was a passion I would continue to feed as my young years passed.
By the time I was in high school I was known by friends and classmates as the art girl who was asked many times to draw or design art for class projects or deco. Sometimes classmates would ask me with offering money if I would create something for them.
As a young adult I realized the fishing community I had called home was not feeding my curiosity of the larger world and what the big city art world was all about. After my studies in university, at the age of 22, I took a gamble and headed for the US. I landed in Florida and was in a complete culture shock and feeling like the fish in my father’s boat flopping in panic for survival. After learning to speak fluent English and immersing myself in American culture, I finally felt at ease in my new wonderful home.
After 5 years, I decided to leave the warmth of Florida’s west coast for Washington DC to see the nations capital and experience an American big city culture. I fell in love with the rolling hills of North and Western Virginia and the suburbs of Washington DC.
I have painted homes with décor art, thematic wall art and seasonal window art for businesses across the greater Washington area. I would love to talk with you for any creative ideas you may have.
I hope to hear from you soon!
